With the same unstoppable force as Galactus devouring worlds at will, that’s how powerful Marvel’s cinematic universe once felt. But after the Avengers saga ended, Marvel began to slow down—offering mostly bland, repetitive stories that lacked soul. Fantastic Four: First Steps felt like a risky bet. It was the first time these characters would be produced under the umbrella of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previous attempts had never quite managed to establish a successful franchise, and bringing them back again sounded like a doomed idea.

For better and for worse, Hollywood is caught between the powerful tentacles of the house of Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, and the entire legion of superheroes that have been born on the pages of their comic strips. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) is the 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 15 years. When the first Guardians of the Galaxy premiered in 2014, it marked a change of pace and stood out for its more acid humor and its daring characters that fit more into the profile of the antihero than the typecast of superheroes to which we were accustomed.

Besides death and taxes, the other sure thing is that we will have Marvel films until the end of time. After the end of a stage with Avengers: Endgame (2019), Disney had already prepared all its framework to continue milking the cow. What they had been giving us for more than 10 years was just the tip of the iceberg and that universe of heroes and villains begins to expand more than a rumor in a small town. With their new Disney + toy, they have found a viable ecosystem to pave the way for new projects and a quick and easy way to introduce new characters. All thought to lay the foundations for generational change.
